The story of Judith and the Head of Holofernes, 1901 - Gustav Klimt
In Klimt’s interpretation of the biblical Judith, sensuality and violence are rendered inseparable. Far from traditional depictions of heroic chastity, this Judith is decadent, empowered, and ambiguous. The gold-leafed surface, influenced by Byzantine mosaics, contrasts with the brutality of her act: a tension that exemplifies fin-de-siècle Vienna’s complex aesthetics.
